Not yet the end for sparrow - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Reviews

That Captain Jack Sparrow didn't appear in the movie's first fifteen minutes, this movie - the third part of the Pirates of the Caribbean multi-million franchise - already gets one star. That Jack Sparrow's appearance, later on, is a grand entrance deserving of any celebrity pirate - doing his first (among a series of) "Sparrow monologues" (or do I call it "moment"?) - this movie earns its second star. Nevermind that we see all of them again here: Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley); Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush); Davy Jones (Bill Nighy); Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander); Bill Turner (Stellan Skarsgard); Governor Swann (Jonathan Pryce); Tia Darma (Naomi Harris); and the rest of the Black Pearl Crew. We all know very well that they will all do their jobs well. Since this two hour and forty-five minute movie boasts of a big gathering of pirates, we see new faces: Captain Sao Feng (Chow Yun Fat); the rest of the Pirates and a brief appearance by Rolling Stone Keith Richards as Captain Teague. There are new gimmicks too: pebble crabs; an upside down ship; a maelstrom; pirates ships; and more pirate ships! With all these offerings, "At World's End" is no doubt a summer fare - one that doubled its spendings to quadruple its earnings. With the huge budget and all the gimmicks, how can you even say that your cinema ticket isn't worth it. But despite the elements in place and the barrage of CGI sequences, director Gore Verbinski cannot avoid the dangling flaws that this huge ship has brought along. The "blah-blah-blah" festival was still retained from the boring second part but are scattered in between action sequences and other visual surprises. Twists for its own sake are again lurking around the storylines but majority of it we can forgive. Verbinski is a pirate. He knows his mistakes and compensates them with guilty pleasures. The action scenes here are better than the first two most especially the part when Sparrow and Jones are both fighting for the possession of the chest (the heart remember?) and its key. Swashbuckling indeed! And Johnny Depp? Fans and skeptics will not be disappointed. (There's your third star!) Writers for this franchise wrote the script with him in mind. Period. So we get so much of him here. If you can't contend yourself to one, there's more of Sparrow here. (Perhaps you have heard of the movie 'Multiplicity'). For all the "over-talking" and old antics the Jack Sparrow way, there is a tendency for audiences to get tired of it. But Depp is in control and, as always, he has proven to all of us that no matter how much they cram this franchise up with hundreds of characters, he is still the star of the show. If that's not talent then I have no idea what it is. So, yes, Jack Sparrow is still captain of this ship. Rating: B-
